Age 28 – 2nd Pregnancy

This is the cervix of a woman currently pregnant with her second child.  She has no history of STDs and has had normal pap smears.  Three years ago, she had a cesarean delivery for her first baby due to a complex posterior presentation.  During the labor of her first baby, she did reach full dilation and so her cervix looks softer with a more slit-like and open os than the cervix of a woman who had a cesarean without dilating.

20 weeks, 6 days

This woman notes that she has more copious cloudy vaginal fluid than she did pre-pregnancy, and doesn’t remember any significant changes in her fluid during her first pregnancy.

  1. I must say that with my second and third pregnancies that I noticed a lot more fluid than pre-pregnancy and first pregnancy.

I was wondering how this situation turned out for you. I just recently found out that I have PCOS and what do you mean when you say “the pregnancy tests always come back neg.” Is this a fact, or just in your particular situation? I have felt pregnancy symptoms for over a month now and had an irregular period that could have been implantion bleeding. Could you please tell me? Thanks

Just because you have PCOS the test will not come back neg.

Exactly, I have PCOS and when I took a clearblue easy test last Oct. 2010 it came back positive. I also went to Dollar store and bought like 15 of them because I didn’t think the clearblue one was right and all of them came back positive and I have a healthy baby girl.
I am blessed to have my baby girl since I have PCOS. I did alot of research and found that Vitex helps with ovulation.

  6. I am just responding to all the questions I saw of women wondering what the cervix looks\ feels like in early pregnancy. I’m five weeks with number two and its like almost before you get your period its slightly hard around the edges but mostly soft and it stays like that.It is not high and not low I have not noted any changes it doesn’t feel closed but that is different with everyone and numbers of vaginal births.I noticed I was expecting because right before my period comes my breast can produce a tinny drop of milk if I try and they never did this month and my nipples were extremely sensitive and it hurt to try and see if milk would come out. I hope this helps someone out there and good luck to all those trying to conceive!!!

  7. I wanted to know if anyone knows what the cervix would look like for a first pregnancy. I am still not sure if we conceived, however I feel wet all the time and my cervix feels like it has closed but is just slighly lower, but not a low as it would have been this time last month. I am 3 days post ovulation. I have never been pregnant before and am really hoping this time works.

  9. This is an amazing website. I am 26 yrs old and ttc #2 but cant test yet because my cycles tend to change every month but I believe I know when I ovulated. 2 weeks later I had a slight spotting once or twice when I wiped myself after peeing for a few days and none since. I then noticed tons of irregular cervical mucous after that..like ovulation ewcm but lots of it unlike any cylce I have had, plus my cervix feels plugged or closed. I don’t know if I am just hoping I am pregnant but so far test have been negative. Has anyone started off like this in early pregnancy? I never checked with my first pregnancy so I have nothing to compare it to.

  10. i am 25yrs old have been pregnant 4x but only had 2children.for the past 7mths my period has been 28dys apart rt on time.I’ve never been past 3dys late for my period and this month i am now 8dys late. i have done 2pregnancy tests and the both came bk negative.my husband looked at my cervix and said it was a bluish/purple color 2mths ago when he checked it was pink. am i still testing too early? and does my cervix color changing mean im pregnant? i go out of town in 2dys and REALLY need to know what’s going on.

  11. Reply to diana; It has been awhile since your post so I’m sure you already know, but for the sake of sharing information yes- a bluish/purplish “discoloration” of the cervix is a probable sign of pregnancy and is known as “Chadwick’s sign”. But like most other probable signs (those observed by a practitioner rather than felt/experienced by the mother) Chadwick’s is normally visible around 6 weeks (i.e. 4 weeks since conception.) If you are 8 days late for your period in a regular 28 day cycle you would only be just 5 weeks “pregnant” or 3 weeks since conception. Of course there are variations woman to woman and you could be showing color change at the cervix around this time (women are not textbooks or clocks, right? We are individuals and we vary) If the pregnancy tests are showing negative it could be because the dates are off i.e. you are further along OR not as far along as you thought. This can throw off a standard HcG urine test. A woman in this situation who suspects she is pregnant can have her progesterone checked by blood test( as long as she does not have PCOS, which would throw that off as well). A birth center, a place like Quest labs or a OB office could check this for you.
Hope it worked out the way you wished for and big respect to you and your boyfriend for being aware of your body/cycle and for being comfortable with each other and checking out your own cervix! That’s awesome!

  12. I’m pregnant with my second child (only 7 weeks) but have had similar doubts about why my cervix feels soft and mushy and slightly open! There is a lot of white CM and I’m hoping that it’s ok to be slightly open and still be closed at the internal os… I’ve had a normal vaginal birth 6 years ago, with no history of complications or M/c. I’m grateful for this photo as it clears a few useless worries I was entertaining, including the possibility of an incompetent cervix!

  13. Ive been keeping track of my cervix and mucus actually starting few days after my period July 2nd (only lasts 2/3 days). Ive been reading a lot online about ferning, temp, mucus and cervix positions and Im not quite sure what to think. Im ttc and had ?s. We had sex pretty much every day during ovul and I think I know when I ovulated bcuz the next day my cervix felt closed (July 14th) and I had cramps for 4 days. My cervix felt harder and lower than during ovulation but its starting to soften and rise/ mucus feels like it did during ovulation. My period is always on time, so I should start on the 2nd of Aug if Im not preg. But is the change in the cervix normal for that time in the cycle wether your preg or not?

  14. I have had my mirena in for a year now. I have had my periods regularly till may 18th, I was one week late. I bleed bad and had huge clots, ER said my mirena was in place and strings showing. I haven’t had my period since. I had a faint positive test, ERs was negative. My cervix is blue though. I am so confused! they said my cervix looks pregnant and blue but my urine was negative. I had my son 13 months ago, c-section. He was transverse. Went through 22 hours of labor and back labor and never dilated to one.

  15. How on earth can you tell if your cervix is high or low? soft or hard? I was initially looking for pictures on vaginal rugae, as I want to know how normal or not normal mine are in comparison to others. I am currently pregnant with my 3rd, I am 28 and am horrified by the appearance of my vagina! I have alot of rugae all around the entrance tunnel/hole and then more in the middle so I can never see a hole as such as it is full of skin and bumps. The rugae on the outside look like shark teeth going all the way around! and I have a discharge every single day, the whole thing is full of a white, very watery discharge and I can’t feel my cervix or anything like that, never have been able to, is this odd? would having weak pelvic floor muscles have anything to do with it? I wish I could just pull it all in together with a needle and thread so it looks neater and more closed!!

The softness or hardness is relative to itself as is the depth of the cervix. Every women’s body is different, so its something to check regularly and compare your results to other days in your cycle – some days you will notice the cervix feels softer or more deep than others.

Perhaps you have a retroverted uterus and your cervix is facing your back, which can make feeling/seeing it more difficult. Maybe you could ask your midwife/OB next time they do a pelvic exam to show you your cervix.

It is common for pregnant women to have copious discharge, but let your practitioner know if you’ve got a foul odor or itching/burning or have changed sexual partners since your last STI test.

I’m sorry you’re feeling insecure about the shape of your rugae – know that those are what expands (like an accordian) to allow the baby to pass through. Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles is almost always a good idea for pregnant women, so squat and kegel away!

  17. I have been reading comments about high and soft and low and hard cervix. But, what about extremely low and soft? It’s never been this low, I’m pretty sure I would have remembered. Past 4 months my periods have been regulated, again, never going beyond 33 days. I am now 16 days past my period due date. Took a test 2 days ago and it was neg. Today had some slight spotting. What is going on? What should I do?

  19. Thank you for this picture. I dilated to 4cm after being induced at 33 weeks due to severe Pre-e with my 1st in 2004, after 36 hours I was sectioned for AOL. Baby number 2 was a repeat CS in 2007 that I was pushed into by a very Pro-CS OB. Baby number 3 was a failed VBAC (OP presentation) and would not descend past 0 station. I dilated fully with her (50 hours of spontaneous labor) and pushed for 2 hours,I suspected that my cervix felt different because I dilated fully with her and this picture confirms it.

  20. I ahve noted with my 5th pregnancy, being 17 weeks, from 5 weeks on I ahve checked once a week as I bleed still once a month and test negative to HPT and bloods but ultrasound shows otherwise. Have sexing scan on Friday. Cervix’s change right throughout pregnancy as the plug is always regenerating. With my 4th I had a bleed behind the placenta and I went from almost 4cm long cervix to 2.4cm and cm dilated, as the bleed healed my cervix relengthened. With this pregnancy I notice 2 changes and that is VERY long hard and closed, to moderate long hard and closed…and copius amounts of CM at any given time. I bleed monthly as I said somewhere around a week off from what would be regular period and I don’t bleed as bad or for as long as a normal one. I also have a severely retroverted and Biocornate uterus (where uterus dips back toward spine mine was close to rectum at 6 weeks and uterus is split so makes pregnancy hard to detect in early stages…certainly an adventure.

  22. I’m 30yo and 24 weeks pregnant with #2. I’ve been having panic attacks and been spending all my time worrying which is ruining my pregnancy. My latest worry is I checked my cervix over last week and I can definitely fit tip of finger inside. Should I be concerned about preterm labour? I’m terrified of losing this baby, to the point of extreme anxiety where my pulse races and I feel short of breath. Thanks for any advice

The cervix of a women who has given birth is often softer and slightly ‘open’ feeling. I suggest you talk to your midwife/doctor and have them check if you’re concerned. Also, have you thought about getting some therapy to help with the anxiety? You might want to check out EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) or EFT (emotional freedom technique). You might feel better if your anxiety levels came down a bit.
